Transformation

Transformation is a leadership problem wearing a technology costume

· 6 min read

Most stalled programmes are not blocked by architecture. They are blocked by unspoken disagreement at the top.

When a transformation programme slips, the first instinct is to look at delivery. Velocity, vendors, architecture, integration debt. Those are real, and they are rarely the binding constraint.

The binding constraint is usually a decision that was never actually made. Two executives left the room with different interpretations, and the organisation faithfully executed both.

The work of a transformation leader is to surface those disagreements early, in language sharp enough that they cannot be nodded through. That is uncomfortable, and it is the job.

A practical test: ask three leaders to write down, separately, what will be true in eighteen months. If the answers do not match, the programme has a leadership problem, not a technology problem.
