Executive presence without the performance

· 5 min read

Presence is not volume or polish. It is the visible link between what you say and what you are willing to decide.

Executive presence is one of the most frequently given and least useful pieces of feedback. It is usually delivered as a style note when it is actually a clarity note.

Leaders who are described as having presence tend to do three things consistently: they state a position, they name the trade-off, and they own the consequence.

None of that requires a different personality. It requires preparation and a willingness to be wrong in public.

If you have been told to work on presence, ask for the specific moment that prompted it. The answer is almost always about a decision you softened.
